Other Special Events
There are many possible special events you may see at clubs. By 'special event' we mean an event other than the regular pairs or teams club game. Here is a partial list of the games you may see advertised below:
- Club Championship - Each club can run four of these in each calendar year for each weekly session they run. These events award more masterpoints to the winners than a regular game. Some clubs with more than one session per week group all of their quarterly club championships into a single week; others spread them out.
- Upgraded Club Championship - Clubs earn one of these games for each 10 new members recruited. They award even more masterpoints than regular club championships.
- Membership Games - These games award increased masterpoints, but only to winners who are ACBL Members or Life Masters.
- Inter-Club Championships - These games are run twice a month by the ACBL on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A morning (start time before noon), afternoon (noon to 5:59 pm start time), or evening session (6:00 or later start time) is specified. If your club runs a game on that date at that time you may participate by registering with the ACBL. They will send a copy of the hand records and you will be charged US$4/table more for the sanction. All participating clubs will be scored across the field and the ACBL-wide leaders will receive a large masterpoint award! Leaders will be posted on the ACBL site, and more information is available here.
- Charity and Fund Games - These games offer increased masterpoint awards in return for a slight raise in the entry fees. The extra money goes to charities (Canadian charities for games run in Canada) or towards the cost of sending ACBL and CBF teams to international competitions. In some games there is the chance at a larger masterpoint award for having the highest score in the District or in the ACBL. Some games also have hand analyses sheets provided to the players after the game.
- Club Appreciation Games - October is Club Appreciation month, and clubs can run pairs or team games for extra masterpoints all month.
- CBF Rookie Master Games - Held usually on a weeknight in April and October, these Canada-wide games match up players with 50 masterpoints or less with experienced duplicate players for one night. Analysis sheets are produced for the game, sometimes by local players like the person currently typing these words...
- WBF World-Wide Bridge Contest - This annual early June Friday evening and Saturday afternoon (two separate sessions) event is scored across the globe, and top on a board can be six digits! A glossy booklet with analyses by Canadian National Team coach Eric Kokish is included.
- ACBL-wide Instant Matchpoint Game - For this annual event in mid-September, Richard Pavlicek analyzes the hands and sets the score for each possible result on a board on special travellers. Winners in each direction get a gold point!
- Multi-Level Events - For information on the COPC, CNTC, go to this page. For information on the GNT or NAP, go to this page. These events have club qualifying games.
- STaC events - Unit 430's District-wide STaC takes place in June every year. Clubs from Alaska, B.C., and Washington participate in a week's worth of duplicate bridge and the highest scores in the District win large overall awards--as well as higher masterpoint awards for the club winners, even if their score doesn't make the District-wide leaders list.
