Tournament Trophy Races

Unit 430 members compete for four trophies based on masterpoints won at open sectionals (not the STaC nor the Future Stars events)over the course of each calendar year.  The Phil Wood Trophy has been awarded since 1968 to the player who wins the most masterpoints at Unit sectionals each calendar year.  The Edith Bonnell Trophy has been awarded since 1979 to the woman player who has won the most masterpoints at sectionals.  The Leo Steil Trophy has been awarded since 1997 to the senior player, 55 or older, who wins the most masterpoints at sectionals (over 65 starting in 2009).  And the Phil Wood Under 200 Trophy has been awarded since 1974 to the highest player on the sectional masterpoint list who began the calendar year with 200 or fewer masterpoints.  Note: to win any of these awards you need to be an ACBL member, but not necessarily a member of Unit 430.

The Phil Wood Trophy winner plays free at sectionals throughout the following calendar year.  The other three trophy winners (or, if the Phil Wood Trophy Winner also wins any of the other three, the second-place finisher) receive six free plays for use at sectionals in the following year.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

460 different players won 3,709.04 silver points (88 more played but didn't win any) in the four Unit 430 open sectionals of 2009.

ACBLScore says that Laurence Betts played 27 sessions at our sectionals, topping the attendance list.  Kathy Adachi, Kathy Bye, Angela Fenton and Gene Fomin all played 26, and nine people played 25 sessions: Monica Angus, Sally Craig, Ann Hung, Allan Karro, Jack Lee, Cathy Miller, Peter Morse, Ben Takemori, and Bob Walters.  We thank everyone for their support.  2009 was a good year in which sectional attendance seemed to halt its recent slide somewhat.
